London, Ontario, is celebrating its 200th anniversary since being officially established as a village at the Forks of the Thames River. The city is gearing up for a year-long celebration filled with events such as tours, markets, and educational experiences to honor its rich history.

The bicentennial festivities kicked off with a New Year’s Eve event in Victoria Park, marking the beginning of a series of celebrations. The Eldon House Levee event, offering refreshments and self-guided tours, is among the initial events of the anniversary year.

Throughout the year, there will be various activities, including the Heritage Fair and History Symposium, as well as city-led initiatives like sidewalk visuals to commemorate the original town plot boundary from 1826. The city has developed a special bicentennial brand that will be shared with event organizers.

London’s unique attributes, such as being a UNESCO City of Music and the Forest City, will be highlighted during the celebrations. The London and Middlesex Historical Society is a key partner in the festivities, commemorating its 125th anniversary alongside London’s bicentennial.

The celebrations will not only focus on the city’s 200-year history but will also recognize the indigenous heritage of the land before London’s establishment. Events like a trivia night at Museum London and the release of 200 Forest City Facts will provide opportunities for residents to engage with and learn about London’s vibrant past.
