“FBI Investigates Portland Shooting Involving DHS Agents”

Share

U.S. federal immigration authorities in Portland, Ore., reportedly shot and injured two individuals, as per official statements. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) identified one of the vehicle’s passengers as a “Venezuelan illegal alien associated with the transnational Tren de Aragua prostitution network” who was linked to a recent Portland shooting incident. Upon agents’ identification of themselves to the occupants on Thursday, the driver allegedly attempted to harm them by driving towards them, prompting an agent to fire a defensive shot for self-protection. Subsequently, the driver fled the scene with the passenger. Independent verification of these events and any gang connections of the vehicle’s occupants is pending.

Previous incidents involving law enforcement agents under President Donald Trump’s increased immigration enforcement, such as the recent fatal shooting by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis, have raised doubts due to video evidence contradicting initial accounts provided by the administration. President Trump and his supporters have consistently blamed the Tren de Aragua group for contributing to violence and drug-related issues in certain U.S. cities.

According to the Portland Police Bureau, officers initially responded to reports of a shooting near a hospital around 2:18 p.m. local time. Shortly after, they received information about a wounded man seeking help in a residential area a few kilometers away, where they discovered two individuals with gunshot injuries. These individuals were confirmed to have been wounded during the encounter with federal agents.

The conditions of the injured individuals were not immediately disclosed. Council President Elana Pirtle-Guiney stated during a Portland city council meeting that the shooting occurred in the eastern part of the city, resulting in injuries to two Portland residents. She expressed hope for positive updates on their conditions throughout the day.

The shooting incident in Portland followed a recent fatal shooting by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis, further escalating tensions in a city with a strained relationship with President Trump. Portland police have secured both the shooting scene and the location where the injured individuals were found pending further investigation.

During a news briefing, Portland Police Chief Bob Day mentioned that the FBI was leading the investigation and provided no specifics on the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Portland Mayor Keith Wilson and the city council jointly called for ICE to halt all operations in Oregon’s largest city until a thorough investigation is conducted.

The city officials emphasized their united stance against the erosion of constitutional rights and increased militarization, stating that Portland should not serve as a training ground for militarized agents. Mayor Wilson expressed skepticism about the federal government’s narrative of the incident, highlighting diminishing trust in their accounts over time.

In response to the situation, city officials emphasized that federal militarization undermines community-based safety efforts and goes against the region’s core values. They pledged to utilize all available legal means to safeguard residents’ civil and human rights and urged the public to approach the situation with composure and resolve.

Senator Jeff Merkley, a Democrat from Oregon, appealed for peaceful protests, cautioning against falling into provocations aimed at inciting unrest. The call for unity, commitment to justice, and protection of Portland was echoed by city officials amid the challenging circumstances.
