The gathering of onlookers surpassed the number of individuals waiting to take the plunge into the frigid waters of Charlottetown harbor during the annual polar bear dip on Thursday. Despite the icy conditions, participants remained enthusiastic about the 36th edition of the event. To maintain order, organizer Jake MacCallum arranged for pairs of people to enter a designated area in the shallow water.

MacCallum emphasized the challenging nature of the polar dip but highlighted its value in preparing individuals for future endeavors. Approximately 150 individuals braved the waters, with some fully immersing themselves while others opting for a brief dip. The resounding cheers from the crowd greeted each participant as they emerged from the water.

For Jennifer Riley, a veteran of polar bear dips, the experience presents a mental challenge and an exhilarating sensation. Similarly, Cathrina Mugford described the dip as a rejuvenating cleanse, symbolizing a fresh start and optimism for the future.

Among the participants were newcomers to Canada and Prince Edward Island, such as Ivan Garrido, originally from Chile. Garrido embraced the cold water as part of his Canadian experience, expressing a sense of fulfillment in trying new activities. He expressed his intention to partake in the polar bear dip again in the coming year.
