Netflix has officially announced the development of a sequel to the highly popular film “KPop Demon Hunters,” which holds the title of the most-watched movie on the streaming platform. This project marks the first venture under their new exclusive contract for writing and directing animated content.

Maggie Kang, a Korean filmmaker with roots in Toronto, expressed her pride in the audience’s interest in the Korean narrative and characters of the film. She mentioned that there is much more to explore within the world they have created, hinting that this sequel is just the beginning.

The animated feature, produced by Sony Pictures Animation, follows the story of K-pop girl group Huntrix, consisting of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who juggle their fame as pop stars with their hidden roles as demon fighters. The movie’s hit song “Golden,” performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, topped the charts, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Accolades poured in for the film, with notable wins at the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes for best animated feature and original song categories. Additionally, “Golden” received a Grammy award for best song written for visual media, marking the first Grammy win for a K-Pop song.

Since its release, “KPop Demon Hunters” has broken numerous viewing records on Netflix, amassing over 482 million views in six months, along with 32 million views for its lyric videos. The film’s soundtrack continues to gain popularity on a global scale.

Looking ahead, Chris Appelhans emphasized the importance of having a clear creative vision for the sequel from the outset to ensure a meaningful and resonant production.
