Sunwing extends Cuba flight suspension

Share

Sunwing Vacations has announced an extension and expansion of its temporary halt of operations in Cuba due to the ongoing disruption in oil supplies to the region. The suspension affects all entities under Sunwing Vacations Group, including Sunwing Vacations, WestJet Vacations, and Vacances WestJet Quebec, with cancellations from June 20 to Oct. 9.

Flights to Varadero and Cayo Coco during the summer season have been postponed, with services set to resume on Oct. 10, as confirmed by Sunwing in a recent statement to CBC News. Additionally, operations to Holguin, Santa Clara, Cayo Largo, and Cienfuegos will recommence on Oct. 25, subject to ongoing monitoring of the situation.

Sunwing Vacations Group, a subsidiary of WestJet Group, emphasized that affected customers will be offered alternative options. While Cuba flights faced disruptions earlier in the year due to fuel shortages, trips to popular destinations like Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Punta Cana, and Montego Bay are still operational.

The oil supply issue in Cuba stems from U.S. President Donald Trump’s actions against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, impacting the nation’s access to oil. Trump’s executive order imposing tariffs on countries supplying oil to Cuba has exacerbated the fuel crisis, leading to challenges for locals, including frequent blackouts and surging prices for essential goods.
