A resident of Grande Prairie, Alberta, April Ellingham, was surprised to spot a moose with large ears in her backyard this week. Initially mistaking it for a rabbit, she soon realized it was a moose lounging in her flower bed. Ellingham, amused by the unusual visitor, shared her experience with CBC News, describing how the moose seemed relaxed and unconcerned.
Living in a tranquil neighborhood in the northern Alberta city, Ellingham mentioned that while deer sightings were common, encounters with moose were rare. However, over the past few days, a moose casually roamed the area before settling down in her garden for a nap.
Despite Ellingham contacting Alberta Fish and Wildlife for assistance, the moose showed no signs of leaving promptly. Wildlife officers attempted to coax the animal away with sirens, causing it to briefly move to a wooded area across the street. However, the moose returned to Ellingham’s property and lounged in her flower bed once again after the officers departed.
Dubbed “Bob” by Ellingham’s husband, the moose drew attention from neighbors who visited to take photos, turning the gentle giant into a local celebrity. After a neighbor pointed out that the moose was actually female, Ellingham renamed her “Roberta.”
Authorities from Alberta Fish and Wildlife explained that moose might venture into urban areas in search of food or to evade predators. While typically not aggressive, moose can feel stressed or defensive, especially when threatened or protecting their young. In such encounters, officials cautioned against approaching, feeding, or frightening the animals and advised giving them space to retreat, keeping pets and children indoors.
Ellingham mentioned that Roberta had eventually left her property by Friday afternoon, though she remained uncertain if the moose would make a return visit.
